Summary
Decades on from the clay pipe works that once occupied this area, featuring a landscape of kilns and chimneys, the brownfield site has gone green, being transformed into a thriving urban woodland. With 40,000 trees, interpretative boards and a variety of features including an orienteering course, the 80-acre Swadlincote Woods provides attractive views overlooking the town. The park contains walking trails, an all-ability access trail and a climbing area. It is home to many plants and animals that can be found in and around the ponds and meadows on site, including dragonflies, butterflies, invertebrates, bats and grass snakes. Trees in the woods feature alder, oak, willow, silver birch, among many other species. A community wood fuel group is now involved with managing the site by removing lower tree branches close to the trails and thinning others.
