Summary
Stepping into The Outwoods is a step back in time, back into nature. These ancient woods, one of the oldest surviving woodland sites in Charnwood, have stood for hundreds of years, surrounding rocks that were formed 700 million years ago. Rare fossils found in these rocks are of international importance to the study of early life forms. Some of the fossils found in the Outwoods can be viewed in Leicester Museum and Charnwood Museum, Loughborough. It is no surprise that this area has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The Outwoods supports a rich variety of plants, insects and birds typical of such old woodlands. Wet alder and dry oak and birch woodland is mixed with blocks of conifer planting, evidence of the extensive clear felling and commercial re-planting which took place in the 1940s. Despite the large-scale felling that took place during the two world wars, many of the woodland plants and animals originally found on the site, such as bluebell and wood anemone, have survived. Springtime visitors will always be pleasantly welcomed by a carpet of woodland colours.
In addition to its natural attractions, visitors will find a variety of walking trails, including an easy access path with a bird feeding station. There is a 24-hour car park for visitors, a children’s natural play area and a café.
